About

Manipulations is a series of loop animations created by Johann Baron Lanteigne, in which each work presents a hand in contact with a simulated or generative virtual matter. The series is interested in gestures, expressiveness and imperfections. This research is made possible by the use of gloves equipped with motion sensors that connect it to the virtual and enable it to stimulate a simulation system with a real impulse: its hand. The gloves spontaneously transpose its intentions to a virtual hand, which serves both as an interface for transmitting the gesture and of material affected by this gesture. Because the sensors and their processing are imperfect, the intention is filtered and distorted. Through the screen, the return of this influence is perceived live and invites Johann to negotiate between the posture of the body and the desired effect on the virtual. This contact with virtual matter explores the ergonomics of technology as well as the contortion that it undergoes as a result of this experiment. This series is used by Johann to prototyping ideas and interoperable systems, which can be integrated into other works. These explorations allow for the rapid prototype of various simulations and procedural systems using motion capture data. In this sense, the series acts as both a sketch book and a collection of works, or rather, traces left by a continuous search.
