About

Above our heads is a long-term project by Josiane Roberge, which links our mental spaces with nature through video and installation. The project was born of a personal need to regain its ability to pay attention to the other, an aptitude that she saw stoking in an increasingly crowded mental space. Inspired by the idea that "the thoughts are composed of the same matter as the wind", Josiane composes video portraits that explore this rich correlation of meaning, by staging space above our heads — a suspended place where vacuum, full, congestion and infinite coexist. This poetic project refers to what lives in us, to what follows us daily, and to the subtle matter of which the human mind is made. Josiane filmes people by putting them in contact with various natural and built landscapes, creating a dialogue between the individual and the environment. It explores how the state of our mental spaces influences changes on a global scale: do our mental territories deteriorate at the same rate as our environment, and vice versa? Josiane wants the visitor to walk through what she imagines as a forest of individualities, meeting each portrait while experimenting with something of the order of the universal and collective. It invites the public, both young and adult, to question themselves about their own mental spaces, their essence and their relationship to the world, hoping to encourage better self-knowledge and greater benevolence towards oneself and nature.
